What came first? The world or you? Seems like an absurd question, isn’t it?
Yet, here’s what the great Masters point:
𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 i𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.
𝗛𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 – 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝗜” 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 – 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 “𝗜” 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁. 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗻.
How to make sense of this?
At a fundamental level, examining the world cannot reveal anything, because the Masters point that the world has risen from you. Ok. So, paying attention to the things, the people, and phenomena of the world cannot reveal the Truth.
If the world has risen from you, as the Masters point, then you need know this “I” that you think you are deeply, completely. You need to know yourself.
You may wonder – but I already know myself. My name is so-and-so. I was born in such-and-such place to my parents. You can go like this and describe your birth facts, your attributes, your relationships, your work, your achievements etc. But who are you?
Asking yourself, “Who am I?” is the beginning of this inquiry to know yourself. To do so is Self-Inquiry.
Beyond your name, attributes, experiences, history, beliefs, aspirations, relationships, who are you? When all these are stripped away – and strip away you should, in the inquiry because they are all coming and going – what remains?
What remains unchanging when all the changing things that want to pass of as “you” are set aside?
Find this in your direct experience.
Need help with this? The book, Awaken: An Experiential Exploration of Enlightenment can help guide you through this direct inquiry into your true nature.
